Geoff Johns Talks The Third Army

To read the full article go to Ain't It Cool News.
GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 kind of changes the playing field quite a bit and then with #13 we are introducing a new Green Lantern, the first new Green Lantern from Earth since Kyle Rayner. I can’t really get into who he is or the circumstances yet, but he’s not exactly chosen in a very typical way, it’s very atypical which makes him a bit of a wild card.
We have a storyline running through all of the GREEN LANTERN books, so you don’t have to buy them all. They don’t’ connect like “part one, part two, part three…” There’s just an event happening in the universe that affects everything called “The Rise of The Third Army” and what that is is the Guardians have always been a little bit on the dodgy side.
They create the Manhunters, because they thought emotion was a weakness in the universe and that’s what was causing pain and war and everything else, emotion. So they created the Manhunter police; that didn’t work out so well. The Manhunters destroyed and wiped out a sector before they were stopped. So then they thought “Maybe it’s not emotion that’s the problem, it’s fear. So we are going to create the Green Lantern Corps and they are going to combat fear, because fear leads to mistrust which leads to violence and war.” That didn’t work out so well, because now the emotional spectrum is out there with all of these different colored Lantern Corps. So from their perspective, it’s chaos. They ran this grand experiment and it’s the second grand experiment that’s failed. “We need to create a third army”, and they say “but what is this source of the universe’s problems? What is that element that we haven’t been able to wipe out?” And it’s free will. They say, “We need to destroy free will. Free will is the problem. The fact that beings have a chance to make that choice, that’s a problem” so they are going to wipe that out. That’s their mission.

Oedipus Rex (1967) - Stills

I just reported on the remastered release of Oedipus Rex in DVD and Bluray formats.

Oedipus Rex [Edipo Re] (1967) - Remastered Releases

Pier Paolo Pasolini’s OEDIPUS REX [EDIPO RE] is to be released in the UK in a Dual Format (DVD & Blu-ray) edition as part of Eureka Entertainment’s MASTERS OF CINEMA Series on 24 September 2012. DVD edition also available!
Three years after The Gospel According to Matthew, Pier Paolo Pasolini resumed his series of classical adaptations with a savage, highly personal take on Sophocles' ancient Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex [Edipo Re]. As his first colour feature,Oedipus Rex makes brilliant use of wildly alternating Moroccan landscapes to transpose collective myth into a particular vision that is at once tender, sensual, and wholly unsparing.
The film is divided into three sections set in different eras. The opening takes place in 1920s Italy, and recounts a birth that echoes that of the director himself, the product of a beautiful bourgeoise's affair with a military officer. The mid section depicts a time "outside of history" – it is here that the myth of Oedipus (portrayed by Franco Citti of Accattone and Coppola's The Godfather), one of patricide and incest, plays out opposite the young man's mother/lover (Silvana Mangano). An epilogue shot on the streets of present-day Bologna finds Oedipus playing his flute for a bustling citizenry.
Special features include:
  • Gorgeous new HD restoration of the film in its original aspect ratio, in 1080p on the Blu-ray
  • Newly translated optional English subtitles
  • Original Italian theatrical trailer
  • 28-page booklet featuring vintage writing by Pasolini, excerpts from an interview with the director by Oswald Stack about the film, and rare archival imagery

Live Action "Masters Of The Universe" Still In The Works

Deadline has an article where Jon Chu talks about the project.
Jon M. Chu is in talks to helm Masters Of The Universe, a live-action film based on the signature Mattel toy line that is in high gear at Sony Pictures and Escape Artists.
Talks are just getting underway with Chu, who is in the middle of a 3D conversion on G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and is preparing to shoot a couple of new scenes for the film, which was pushed to a March 29, 2013 release by Paramount. The Mastersfilm revolves around He-Man, a prince who transforms into a warrior and becomes the last hope for a magical world that has been ravaged by the sinister Skeletor.

Ant-Man (2014) - Is That Right?

According to the Latino Review:
The current rumor buzzing around the internet after Edgar Wright’s ‘Ant-Man’ test footage debuted at San Diego Comic Con is that ‘Ant-Man’ could possibly be added to Marvel’s 2014 slate (joining ‘Guardians’ and ‘Cap 2′), kicking off the oft-rumored Marvel strategy of adding a third in-continuity film during these Phase 2 years.

The Wolverine (2013) - Set Footage

The film is scheduled to hit theaters on 26 July 2013.

Total Recall (2012) - New International Spot

The film opens on 03 August.

Dead Shot To Be On "Arrow"

According to KSite.tv:
In an interview at KSiteTV’s Arrow portal, GreenArrowTV, Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg hinted that the third episode would have “someone you have seen before, but you’re going to be seeing in a very different light.” This is true – Deadshot appeared in the tenth and final season ofSmallville, beginning with the episode “Shield.” There, he was played by Bradley Stryker and was shown as a bit of a modern-day cowboy.

Is The X-Men Sequel Definitely "Days Of Future Past"?

Latino Review has the following, taken from another website:
[N]ow Russian siteStarkIndustries.ru is citing a Russian site roughly translated to “Film Business Today” to break the news that the sequel to ‘X-Men: First Class’ will be titled ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past.’
In the original story, an adult Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat)  returns to the present to take control of her younger self. He goal is to prevent the future she knows, where mutants have been hunted to near extinction by the robotic Sentinels. And, in the past, she works with the X-men to prevent this future from happening all while, in her time, the surviving X-men are killed off one by one.

Fallen Superheroes (Book)

Bleeding Cool brings us the following sneak peek into "Fallen Superheroes", which purchased from Amazon.  The description of the book reads:
Using superheroes as the allegory, this colorful photo narrative explores the not-so-glamorous and sometimes dark realities of those who strive to live their dreams against all odds. The creators of Mime Very Own Book have reunited to pair trademark imagery with witty snippets to create a hilarious visual smorgasbord of real people and their quest to see themselves as more than they really are. From fast food to the simple pleasures of gardening, this lighthearted spoof reveals the superhero in all.

Weekend Comic Book Update (for 29 July 2012)

Star Trek #11 - "The Truth About Tribbles Part 1"
Writer: Mike Johnson
Artist: Claudia Balboni

Before opening this, I expected it to be the re-imagination of the episode "The Trouble With Tribbles". But, instead, we're taken back even further and are shown the Tribble homeworld when the Enterprise encounters a Klingon bird of prey in Federation space.

When pursuit becomes futile, Kirk orders the ship to trace the Klingon's flight path back to its origin, which is a small planet in the Iota Germinorum system. One with "an abundance of local fauna and flora", according to Spock.

The away team finds Klingon explosive devices scattered through the surface, and it's a race against time to defuse them before they detonate.

I have to say that the original story is one of my favorites. So I had mixed hopes about how it would be redone for the new series. And I'm glad to say that I like how they tackled it. Johnson did a great job of taking what was a key aspect of that story, namely the Tribbles' dislike of Klingons, and turning it into a war the Klingons are determined to win! Well done, and I cannot wait for the next part!

Marvel Zombies Destroy! #5 (of 5)
Writer: Peter David
Artist: Mirco Pierfederici

Wrapping up the other-dimensional mission to stop the Nazi Zombies, the Asgardian Zombies and the Zombie Invaders from piloting a sled pulled by zombified Asgardian giant goats.

Yes, zombie goats! That eat ANYTHING! Including characters that are no longer necessary and who feel, as I said before, like they were there solely to be fodder for the zombies. That's why, in the end, I don't get invested in them nor am I surprised when they're killed off.

The mission is generally a success, Dum Dum and Howard The Duck return after Miss America performs the same heroic act as Captain America when she rides a rocket to stop it.

But, unfortunately, the story ends with the setup for ANOTHER zombie series. Something that Marvel needs to stop doing. Because, honestly, another world of zombie heroes and a cast of either heroes who aren't going to die or unknowns who you KNOW are going to die, is boring. And you're not doing it right anyway.

Baltimore: Dr. Leskovar's Remedy #2 (of 2)
Writer: Mike Mignola & Christopher Golden
Artist: Ben Stenbeck

Dr. Leskovar and his creations come out to play, facing off against Lord Baltimore in this side story about good intentions and the hells they unleash on everybody.

Dr. Leskovar learns that his mistakes have been eaten by crabs who have turned into monsters. His creations want him dead, and he now considers himself the next step in human evolution.

Only he doesn't expect the next step in crab evolution.

A fine story, wrapped up nicely and done at just the right pace. Though I do so hope that Lord Baltimore does one day fine and destroy Haigus. It's very frustrating to see the hells this poor man has gone through while thinking he may never achieve his ultimate goal of revenge.

But, then, that may be his own personal Hell here on Earth.

Is A Marvel TV Series Based In "The Avengers" Coming?

The Deadline article says:
I’ve learned that Marvel’s TV division is in conversation with ABC and ABC Studios about doing a drama series in the Avengers world. I hear that the connection to the Avengers franchise would be light as the project is expected to be set in the universe and feature some of its themes and feel, but may not include any characters from Joss Whedon’s blockbuster.

Devlin Returns Paycheck After Writing An ID4 Sequel

Not long ago I reported that Dean Devlin has said that, when they have the right story, he and his partners would give us a sequel to Independence Day. And he apparently really means it.

Collider has the following regarding the first attempt at a sequel that Devlin was paid to do:
"Many years ago, I was actually hired to write the sequel to Independence Day. And I wrote a sequel. And they paid me a boatload of money to go write this thing. And after I wrote it, I read it and I gave them back the money and I said, 'look, this is an okay movie I just wrote. But it's not worthy of the sequel to Independence Day.' And I literally gave back the money. And afterwards I said, 'You know what? I'm not even going to try anymore.' And it was only about a year-and-a-half ago that Roland called me up and said, 'We should try again.'"

Thanos: Son Of Titan (Comic) - Title Cancelled

Marvel has cancelled, not postponed, this mini-series. According to Diamond:
THANOS SON OF TITAN #1 (OF 5) & VAR (AUG120580-1, $2.99, FOC 09/24/12) has been cancelled.
I'm sure Thanos is not pleased.

The Cost Of Being Iron Man

To go with our recent post about the cost of being Batman, here's an infographic on the cost of being Iron Man.

X-Men #1 Sells For Nearly 1/2 Million Dollars

Bleeding Cool brings us the story of a copy, graded a 9.8, of X-Men #1 that sold for $492,937.50! The comic was published in 1963 and was the first appearance of the mutants that have come to define a part of the Marvel Universe.

MTV Geek talked with Tim Brevoort from Marvel about the new character designs that are a part of the upcoming "Marvel NOW!". Here is an excerpt talking about the changes to Captain America, which you can see below:
The approach and the thought was very simple: we wanted to modernize Cap’s outfit so as to reflect the gear worn by actual soldiers, to convey that sense of the character visually.
We weren’t really thinking about the movie incarnation per se, though it’s difficult to avoid it I suppose. But even there, Cap’s already had two completely different suits in the movies, in CAP: FIRST AVENGER and then in MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS. What we were really going for, more than anything, was the feeling of Cap being an actual soldier. At the outset, I did some research and collected a bunch of different photographs of modern military gear, helmets and what-have-you, and they all informed the design we eventually settled on.

I Am A Ghost (2012) - Trailer

For more details, visit the official website or Facebook page.
Taking place in a single Victorian house during an indeterminable time period, I Am A Ghost is a supernatural mystery that explores identity mixing experimental non-linear filmmaking with classic haunted house spookiness.
Emily (Anna Ishida), a troubled spirit, haunts her own house every day, wondering why she can’t leave. With the help of Sylvia (Jeannie Barroga), a clairvoyant hired to rid the house of spirits, Emily is forced into a ‘patient/therapist’ relationship, uncovering disturbing mysteries about her past that may help her move on to ‘the next place.’
Spooky, atmospheric and experimental, I Am A Ghost is the second narrative feature from H.P. Mendoza (writer of Colma: The Musical and director of Fruit Fly).

Goat Man (Short) - First Glimpse Of Goat Man

Special thanks to Dread Central for sharing this with us!
There's a widely-spread piece of Texas folklore about a legendary creature appearing to be half-man and half-goat. It's seen about as often as Sasquatch or the Loch Ness Monster. Whether it's good or evil is anyone's guess...but it's interesting, nonetheless.
The story of the origin of Goat Man takes place in the late 1800s. A small town political figure, living alone with only his married West-Indian servants, has decided to run for office, and is a sure fit for the position in question. That is, unless, his deep dark secret exposes him: he often takes up with his farm animals. As you might imagine, karma comes to collect when his conquest of choice, his she-goat, gives birth to the hideous creature we come to know as the Goat Man.
