Get Your First Look At Cobie Smulders As Maria Hill From "The Avengers"

If, like me, you're a fan of "How I Met Your Mother" then you know the character of Robin Scherbatsky, played by Cobie Smulders. And, maybe like me, you thought it was interesting to see that she had been cast as Maria Hill, and agent of SHIELD and a part of the upcoming Avengers film.

Take a look at her in character, along with Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

Pick up your copy here.

WHEN TEENAGE GIRLS VANISH in what was once considered a safe, Louisiana bayou town, the lives of four desperate young locals take unexpected turns, begging the crucial question: Do you every truly know those closest to you?
When nineteen-year-old Tiffany Perron vanishes from rural Grand Trespass, Louisiana, best friend HALEY LANDRY's relationship with her boyfriend becomes increasingly strained. To make matters worse, her impressionable younger sister BECKY has begun idolizing an impetuous, seductive 15 year old who's encouraging her to do dangerous things.
Meanwhile, ERICA DUVALL, a reclusive 19-year-old aspiring writer, befriends Haley. Ten years earlier, Erica’s mother abandoned her, leaving her with the womanizing used car salesman father she loathes. She’s decided to write a novel based on Tiffany’s disappearance; a novel that she hopes will lead to a reunion with her estranged novelist mother.
RACHEL ANDERSON, a 36-year-old mother of two, is having trouble coming to terms with her husband, TOM’s, affair with the missing girl—a relationship that supposedly ended shortly before Tiffany’s disappearance. What’s more, she comes to the blood curdling realization that someone is watching her through the large back windows of her house.
A DISTURBED MAN also lives in the area. Ever since his mother’s murder four years earlier, he’s been raising his insolent teenage sister, ALLIE, who sleeps with truck drivers for money. He considers women to be dangerous—and his world revolves around his fear and hatred for them. He’s terrified of his sister, knowing she’s intent on pushing him over the edge.

Weekend Comic Book Update (for 26 February 2012)

Halo: Invasion #2 (of 4)

Masterchief completes the initial "test" by Col. Ackerson, which causes Cortana to send him a few surprises. The Covenant are discovered en masse in the Epsilon Eridani system heading for Reach. The Masterchief and the other Spartans are deployed on special ops missions.

This series continues to be an excellent companion to the book "Fall Of Reach". The visuals by Felix Ruiz bring to life the story, and keep true to the original game's artwork and style.

I'm especially enjoying seeing other Spartans, such as Fred and Kelly, that I've only read about in other Halo novels, such as "Ghosts Of Onyx". But I do wish that the individual Spartan armour could be more individualized as in the game "Reach". When the Masterchief dispatches his team at one point the five of them kind of just blend together.

But for any fan of Halo this is a time to read.

DC Universe Online Legends #23 - "Victory"

I'm slowly growing frustrated with this title. It has felt repeatedly like it's just about to get to a conclusion and then it doesn't.

This issue is no different. We have two stories going on: in one Luthor consults with his past self and tells him of his failure and how they need to correct things, and in the other the heroes and villains prepare to mount another attack on Braniac. But in that group, some villains have conspired with Braniac to take out the heroes in exchange for becoming overlords of Earth when Braniac finishes his plans.

The artwork is good as always. The story, though, really needs to find a conclusion. My theory is that comics are best when a major story lasts about six issues (the length of a trade paperback) at most. Anything longer than that feels tedious and artificially stretched.

And DC Universe Online Legends feels exactly that way.

Review: Comic Book Men (TV series)

So it took me an extra week to get to the first episode, until after episode two came out.

I wish I had waited longer.

It is a faux reality show set in the Red Bank comic book shop owned by Kevin Smith called "Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash". The show switches back and forth between Smith with the shop employees (Walt, Bryan, Ming and Mike, of which Bryan isn't even an employee but just a hanger-on) in a recording studio doing their podcast and either the comic shop or, in episode one, a flea market. And in each case the dialog is highly contrived and uncompelling.

When recording their podcast, there's mugging for the camera and Smith making references to movies. The cast are trying to be funny and it's just....not. And, coming from someone who's pretty unfunny, I know what I'm talking about here. Some of their insights were interesting, such as comments on Jack Kirby's artwork or the acceptability of hypodermic needles on comic book covers. And had the show stuck with more of this sort of discussion then I'd have been happier.

But that's not what they did. And that's pretty bad.

But what's more bad is the fake situations in the comic shop. The shop never has customers in it. Instead it's just a string of people walking in who are trying to sell some sort of collectible that's meant to appeal to the viewer. A Six Million Dollar Man action figure, an original movie poster for 1979's "Dawn Of The Dead" or an original signed piece of artwork by Bob Kane. But it's very clear that in each case the situation is completely fake.

And it's that phoniness that turned me off.

I don't want to watch fake, and poorly acted, scenes that try to make these four guys seem somehow witty, hip and ironic. I'm not sure who their target audience is, but as a comic book nerd who actually does spend every Thursday afternoon standing in a real comic shop talking comic book talk, I can say that I'm not interested at all. I don't like the type of series they're trying to emulate in the first place, so I don't know why anybody would try to adapt a bad format to something so specific that it would only appeal to a subset of a subset or a target audience.

What I wanted was a television show that was more like the conversations I have with Rob, Casey, Kasey, Steve, Ethan, Daniel, Rick and the others at my comic shop, Foundation's Edge. But with people who make US feel like the cool kids. I wanted to see in depth discussions of story arches, the changes of characters over the years, insights on the New 52 or the upcoming Avengers Vs. X-Men story arch. Something. ANYTHING like that.

But this pilot episode at least was a total disappointment. So bad that when my DVR failed to capture the last few minutes I wasn't disappointed at all. I was actually relieved that it was finally done.

And, for me, I don't know that I'm going to add to my displeasure by watching the second episode. But I will just to see if all the things I disliked about the episode were the result of a bad pilot. But I'm not holding out much hope. And if it doesn't dazzle, I won't be back for the third.

Origin: Prologue (Kickstarter Project)

Friend of the show and director Rick Greenwood (Hinnon Valley, reviewed in episode 87) shared the kickstarter for his new project with me. The synopsis for the film is:
In a cold dark city permeating with death, greed, hunger and violence, a Fallen Angel struggles to know his identity and his past. The only thing he knows is the violent murders he is drawn to commit and the pleasure he feels doing so, until the day he spares the life of a young woman. Deciding she is “special” he seeks her out and convinces her into helping him discover his origin.
As they embark on their quest they are pursued by a driven “super” cop, motivated by his own personal vengeance, and a malicious religious cult that is out to bring the world to their knees, at the foot of the church. The Fallen Angel must accept his true identity while discovering humanity within himself before he can fulfill his divine destiny.

Not A Review: Impact (2008)

While editing episode 141 of the podcast, I watched the film Impact on the Syfy Channel. And some of the things that were said in it were just....oh, I wanted to yell at the television. I mean, seriously, if you're going to write a movie about something like the Moon being driven into the Earth by the impact of a near-Earth object (NEO), then you should first at least try to UNDERSTAND some of the things you're having your scientist characters say.

These are just a few items that should either have been learned in a basic physics or earth science class or else just quickly checked out on Wikipedia or other online sources.

Does the Moon have a magnetic field?

Living on Earth, we tend to take the concept of magnets and the north and south poles for granted. The reason we are able to use a compass here on Earth is due to our planet having a large metallic core. Without going into a HUGE explanation, the simple version is this: the Earth's inner core is a giant ball of mostly iron surrounded by a liquid outer layer of molten metals. Since the core rotates at a different rate than the liquid shell around, friction generates an electric field between the two layers, and the motion of the core through that field creates a moving electric field which produces a magnetic field (Ampere's Law). This is the source of the Earth's magnetic field. [1][2]

The Moon, however, does have a magnetic field, but it is extremely weak. It's core is small at less than 25% of the Moon's radius (the Earth's core is 50% of the Earth's radius), and does not project a field.

Would the Moon falling towards the Earth create electricity?

Given that the Moon is actually a magnet, then it would generate an electric field while moving. A simple way to explain it is to use the Right Hand Rule for magnets in motion. When a magnet moves it creates an circular electric field around itself. If you point the thumb of your right hand and then curl your fingers (like you're gripping a can sideways)  then you can see what the field would look like. The thumb points in the direction of the change in the magnetic field (the motion) and the fingers point in the direction of the electric field being generated. This is the science behind generators, which use spinning magnets to generate electricity.[3]

This effect was experience when, as the Moon fell towards the Earth, people on the surface of the Earth began experiencing electric surges. The problems lies not with the effect itself but with how the lead characters, who are scientists, react to it.

They say they have no idea what is causing the surges! Which is sad since Faraday's law is something taught in any basic physics course. Anybody who was an astrophysicist, cosmologist or similar discipline would know these things. It would be a part of their basic training at university.

Would objects on Earth suddenly float up towards the Moon?

No, they wouldn't. As the Moon moves towards the Earth, the pull of gravity by the Earth would slowly be counteracted by the gravitational pull of the Moon.[4] You would gradually feel lighter, but never so light that you would float. The only way you would feel that light would be if you were on the object of less mass (the Moon), and even then it would be so close to impact between the two objects that your floating would really just be you falling off of the Moon onto the Earth.

The tides are caused by the Moon's gravity pull on the bodies of water on the side of the Earth facing the Moon, and on the crust on the far side of the Earth from the Moon. If anything would be affected by the Moon coming towards the Earth it would be a significant increase in both tidal activity as well as tectonic activity. The Moon would wreak havoc with the Earth's crust and with coastal regions as higher tides and flexing plates would cause the surface to violently shake and fracture.

To go further with this, if you DID suddenly become weightless or float away, there's no reason why you would then fall back to Earth again. In the film, a father and son as well as a commuter train experienced this floating and then both were cast back down to Earth violently some time after. But the gravitational force is a constant force at a distance. You wouldn't have a surge that would then evaporate and cause such an event. And it would have at least balanced that out if they had shown objects on the far side of the Earth suddenly being crushed under the same gravitational fluctuations.

If anything, the surface of the Moon would be experiencing a huge bit of electrical activity. Especially since, in reality, as the Moon moves through the Earth's magnetotail particles on the Lunar surface will actually rise up off of the surface and float!

But it is funny to see a grandfather and his two grandkids fly up into the air in their car, but the grandfather's hat and the girl's pig tails are unaffected by the reverse gravity that they're experiencing...

Conclusions

Sure, this film wasn't meant to be a serious scientifically based story. But to have a scientist say something as ridiculous as "The Moon is not capable of manipulating gravity itself" or for scientists to say, on one hand, that the Moon's magnetic field has changed and then say they don't know what is causing electrical surges on the Earth's surface is just ridiculous and shows sloppy writing and no interest in validating even simple science for the story. I wrote this opinion in less than 15 minutes with just a few google searches for references. I'm sure the writers had more time than that to work some real information into their story...

Review: Chronicle (2012)

Review by Ben Pierce.

9.75 out of 10
Chronicle starts out with a kid, Andrew, starting up a camera he bought and says that he is going to start filming everything, as his dad bangs on his locked door, threatening him to open it. He films everything around him, from the neighborhood 'Douche-bags' to where he eats lunch, to the school bully, to his sick mother.

Andrew is kind of a loner, without any friends at school. His cousin, Matt, invites him to a party at an abandoned store by a forest. Andrew declines, but as the time for the party rolls around, his father yells at him, angering Andrew, which makes him change his mind about the party. Matt picks him up and they head to the party.

At the party, Andrew films the place, and douche comes up and yells at him for 'filming his girlfriend'. Andrew goes outside and cries, depressed about all of this. One of the popular kids from school comes up, Steve, and asks why he is crying. He invites him to come with him to a 'cool thing' they found.

Andrew follows Steve into the forest, where Matt is hovering over a hole in the ground. Steve hops into the hole, followed by Matt, to which Andrew is left with no choice but to follow them. About 20 yards through a dark damp tunnel, they find a strange thing, of which messes with Andrew's camera, not allowing it to film it well. Their noses starts bleeding, and they pass out.

What made this movie as good as it is, is that it didn't bother dabbling in the exposition, or how they got their powers. Chronicle also had very realistic characters, and a realistic setting. They weren't good or bad. And not only that, but it never stuck to just one mood. It had lots of laughs at the beginning, and was very cool, and even sad at the end.

I definitely say watch it while it is still in theaters, and when it comes out, buy it and frame it on the wall.

Adam Adamowicz was a concept artist who helped create the world of the Capital Wasteland. And they area also donating in his memory to the American Cancer Society.

Weekend Comic Book Update (for 12 February 2012)

Swamp Thing #6 - "The Black Queen"

Alec and Abby face off against William. But they learn, too late, that William has a trick up his sleeve. One he learned while in hospital. One that's going to take them both by surprise.

Swamp Thing is definitely keeping its place as one of my favorite titles. The artwork is richly detailed. The story is well-done and intricate.

Scott Snyder has quite a bit to show us with this title. It's not a simple case of William, the boy in the hospital, chasing down Alec Holland to kill him. Instead Snyder has molded this villain into more of a Machiavellian character, working the chess board to his own advantage.

And, in the end, Alec may not have a valid end game strategy.

Animal Man #6 - "Tights"

This issue takes a break from the primary story going on with Animal Man, which ties it together with Swamp Thing, and explores another aspect of the Animal Man character.

Buddy Baker wasn't just a super hero without a secret identity. He was also an actor, and held the lead role in a film called "Tights". And in it he plays a hero, named "Red Thunder", whose alcoholism has cost him his family as well as his ability to fight crime. And when he tries to reclaim both, he ends up a broken man in more ways than one.

And this reflects on Buddy as Animal Man. A character who knows deep down that his ability is unique and he's got a pivotal role to play in the world. But nobody else seems to see it that way, except for his daughter. And his wife thinks they can just call the police and hand the problem over.

But they can't.

The artwork in this issue was primary done by John Paul Leon with the last two pages by Travel Foreman. In this issue Lemire's work was more appealing. And Lemire's writing was well done. And it ends with a teaser for next month when both Swamp Thing and Animal Man come together. Something I've been waiting anxiously for these past few months.

Trailer: Iron Sky (2012)

Check out the trailer for Iron Sky, which will make its theatrical debut this year. The synopsis for the film is:
Towards the end of World War II the Nazi scientists made a significant breakthrough in anti-gravity. From a secret base built in the Antarctic, the first Nazi spaceships were launched in late '45 to found the military base Schwarze Sonne (Black Sun) on the dark side of the Moon. This base was to build a powerful invasion fleet and return to take over the Earth once the time was right.
Now it's 2018, and it's the time for the first American Moon landing since the 70′s. Meanwhile the Nazi invasion, that has been over 70 years in the making, is on its way, and the world is goose-stepping towards its doom. The three main characters of the story are Renate Richter (Julia Dietze), Klaus Adler (Götz Otto), and James Washington (Christopher Kirby).

Weekend Comic Book Update (for 06 February 2012)

American Vampire #23 (Death Race, Part Two Of Four)

We learn a little more about Travis and his upbringing as he and Skinner Sweet play a game of chicken while racing towards a cliff's edge.

Again, Scott Snyder delivers a great story with interesting and compelling characters in the American Vampire lore. Set in the 50s, this current story arch has a James Dean enemy to the vampires who is tracking down Sweet specifically.

Though I think, for me at least, that having Skinner as the villain again is starting to feel like the television series "Heroes" with Sylar. We have a great premise for building up a stable of bad guys. So why not go after someone else or else develop a new big bad? I loved the American Indian vampire in the cave from the last story, and would love to see more of them explored.

Green Lantern: New Guardians #5 (The Orrery)

The events in this issue all take place prior to Red Lanterns #3.

We have the return of the extra-dimensional beings from  Final Crisis. And Kyle Rayner leads the team of lanterns from each of the other corps into the vortex.

A nice development story. We learn a little bit more about a few of the lanterns. We go back inside the Orrery from Final Crisis and find some species kept in world-sized containers. And we learn that Larfleeze isn't very popular there either.

I especially love the artwork of Tyler Kirkham. But I'm not too thrilled with the return of multi-dimensional beings. I think it's too early in the New 52 to bring such elements back that can be way too confusing.

Justice League #5 (Justice League Part Five)

The newly, though loosely, formed League take their first steps towards fighting their newly revealed foe, Darkseid. Superman gets his ass whipped, Flash tries to save the Man of Steel, and Batman takes off his cowl.

All in all a great, action filled issue. Though I'm still a little confused as to why the Batman ditches his cape and cowl to go after Darkseid's minions when they take Superman away.

Jim Lee's artwork is incredible, as always. And his full page image of Apokalypse was more than stunning. I love his characters and the fluidity in their motion.

The Bunnyman (2009)

Review by Benjamin Pierce.

Bunnyman starts out with some bloodied chick hiding in a small crate. Since she is apparently awful at playing hide and seek, she jumps out of her hiding place and starts running/stumbling through a junkyard. She finds a new hiding place, the uncovered back of a truck, which is littered with human bones.
The truck starts moving, and the chick finds some relief. It then zips over to six teenagers in a Toyota breaking several safety laws(no seatbelts, feet up, four people in the back seat). Going at about 50mph down a backroad presumably in Nevada, they find themselves behind the truck with the bloodied chick in it.
They go around it, but the truck goes around them. After 15 minutes of roadrage between the two vehicles attempting to go around eachother, the teens finally pull over to apologize. The truck pulls over behind them, and they shove one of their chicks out to go apologize. She walks over and starts saying 'sorry', but the truck driver just revs the engine. She cannot see who is driving because the windows are dirty and tinted.
When she attempts to open the door, whomever is driving smacks her with the door and shuts it. She goes back to the car, and they decide to wait it out. After a bit, the truck finally pulls out and drives away. The teens continue on their way, wherever that may be, along the road. As they drive down it going about sixty, the truck appears again and the teens swerve off the road and into a bush.
The car stutters and the engine breaks, incapacitating the car. One of the teens gets out and goes under the car to see the problem, when the truck appears once more. It hits their bumper, and then drives off. When one of the  teens gets out to retrieve the dude fixing the car, they find him crushed underneath of the car, from when the truck hit them.
The 5 spooked teens leave the car and start walking along the highway. They see a path, and decide to take it. When they walk up the path, they find a bunch of human bones in bags tied to branches in the trees. They find is a wooden house with some dirty redneck perched in a rocking chair on the second floor balcony. The teens ask to use their phone, and when he refuses, they attempt to bribe him with 100$.
The redneck then asks for one of the chicks, and is a real perv about it. When they flip him off and start walking away, he pulls out a shotgun and tells them to scram. He fires a round in the air, and they speed up, walking into the forest.
It then goes to the Bunnyman, who goes to the back of the truck and takes out the bloodied chick. He attaches a metal chain to her, and ties on part of it to a tree, and one part of it to the truck's bumper. He then floors the truck, and rips her in half.
By nightfall, a teenage boy and girl are loading a body into the trunk of their car when they see the 5 teens walking up the highway. They ask for a ride, but the girl refuses, and tells them there is a cabin up the road that can stay in, and that they will be back in twenty minutes.
It then fast forwards to daylight, where the teens are just waking up a little ways off the road in some grass. They get up and start looking for the cabin, wondering where the 2 teens were that were going to pick them up. One of the teen chicks starts bitching about their dead friend, and runs off into the forest. Her boyfriend chases after her, only to find her looking over a rock at a person in a rabbit costume picking at a bloody hunk of meat with a butterknife.
She goes around the rock and discovers the Bunnyman surrounded with dead bodies, and that he has a chainsaw. Her boyfriend startles her, and she tells him to be quiet. When she turns back around, the Bunnyman is standing there with a chainsaw in hand. Her boyfriend runs away, and the Bunnyman throws the chick onto a rock behind him. Instead of chasing him, he cuts up her with a chainsaw.
The dude sprints to the cabin, and the other 3 teenagers follow him. They try to cover the windows in the cabin, but the Bunnyman comes to the side door. They pull up a mattress to cover it, but the Bunnyman uses his chainsaw to start cutting through it. They then pulled the mattress down, ripping the chainsaw out of his hand. The Bunnyman calls it quits and walks away, and they continue to try to board up the place.
One of the teens gets punched in the face by the Bunnyman through the window, and she falls over, unconscious. The other three teens make a run for it, but one of them gets separated. The separated one tries to hide under the cabin, but the Bunnyman finds him, and proceeds to kill him with a chainsaw.
The unconscious teen wakes up to find herself strapped to a table, with the Bunnyman preparing tools and some Igor thing helping him. The Bunnyman turns on some classical music, and then shoots her several times with a nail gun. The Bunnyman then plucks out some of her teeth, and finishes her off with a chainsaw.
It then goes over to the other two teens, a chick and her boyfriend, who are hiding a littleways outside the cabin. They decide to go back to help their friend, unknowing that she is already dead. They go in, find she is dead, and hide in a closet. The Bunnyman, the Igor thing, and the chick from the car back in the nightfall segment(whats up with that?) come in and feast on cooked human remains. The chick from the car tells the Bunnyman to take off the mask, saying, "We already went over this!".
The two teens try to make a run for it, but they get knocked out by the Bunnyman. They wake up, with the dude tied to a table, and the chick getting ready to be tortured. The dude manages to cut his binds, punch the chick from the car in the face, and save his girlfriend. He picks up a chainsaw(Apparently they are everywhere), and kills the chick from the car. They grab a pair of keys, drop the chainsaw, and run to a red pickup truck. They escape with it, and start driving down the road.
Then the truck from the beginning starts following them, with the Bunnyman in  the driver's seat. They realize that they can't outrun him, and they pull over. The dude says he has a plan, and he brings the chick's limp body out. He tells the Bunnyman that she's dead, and asks, "Are you happy now? Everyone is dead!". The dude tells the Bunnyman that he doesn't have anything to fight him with, and he is giving up the chick. He backs off and the Bunnyman  emerges, confused, and takes the chick.
When the Bunnyman places the chick in the passenger's seat, and gets into the truck. The chick gets up, and stabs the Bunnyman several times in the head with a pair of scissors. The Bunnyman falls out of the truck, and the dude gets in. They drive away, finally away from that hellhole.
It ends with the Bunnyman walking into the sunset through the terrain.
The movie was definitely B rated, with 'OK' acting, bad voice dubs, and definitely not enough blood or gore to be a scary horror movie.
Borrow it, if your into B movies or like the urban legend. Otherwise, don't bother.
