RIP: Jack Tramiel (1928-2012)

When I was a kid I got my first computer, a Commodore 64.

I then returned it and bought an Atari 800XL because my friends had them.

But less than a year later I sold the Atari and bought another Commodore, this time a C=128. And I loved it more than the Atari. Don't get me wrong, the Atari was fine. But the Commodore was just slicker, had great games, and was a blast to program.

Yes, that's what got me into programming.

And I completely blame Jack Tramiel for that. It was the product of the company he founded that set the course for my professional life, for my obsessions in my personal time, and all the frustration, fun and joy I've experienced since then.

Mr. Tramiel passed away on Easter Sunday. But I'll always be thankful to him for the lifelong passion I've had for computers.  Rest in peace, sir.
